Guide: Amazing Green Smoothie Combos

Theres more than one way to make a tasty and nutritious smoothie. In fact, the combinations are seemingly endless! The matrix below is a guide for making a basic green smoothie, including some of the more commonly used ingredients. Simply choose at least one ingredient from each column, blend, and enjoy a nutritious breakfast, snack or even dessert! A few notes: Ripe, frozen bananas make a great smoothie base, adding a sweet flavor and creamy texture. Try using one banana and half a cup of other fruit. If you dont like bananas, use a cup of one or more of the other types of fruit listed. If youre shy about greens, try starting with 1 cup instead of 2, but be sure to use a whole cup of liquid. Twinkling Good Vanilla Snack Cakes: King Arthur Flour

1) Preheat the oven to 350F. Spritz a filled cake pan (aka cream canoe pan) with a light layer of cooking spray. Set aside. 2) Place all ingredients except beaten egg whites into a large mixing bowl. Beat until smooth. 3) Working in thirds, fold the beaten egg whites into the batter. Take care to keep the batter light; fold, don't beat. 4) Fill each section of the snack cake pan 2/3 full. The cakes will puff quite a bit during baking, but will shrink back during cooling. Bake the cakes in a preheated oven for 8-12 minutes, until golden brown. 5) Remove the pan from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Using a flexible spatula, gentle remove each cake and cool flat side down on a rack until completely cool. In the meantime, prepare the snack cake filling. 6) In a small saucepan cook flour

Dixie restaurant has potential

Dixie is an ambitious restaurant that still seems to be searching for an identity. It starts with the name. It sounds like a place for Southern comfort food, but Joseph Humphrey, who was the chef of Meadowood and Murray Circle before taking over this space in the Presidio, doesn't really do comfort food. His version of chicken and dumplings ($24) features a beautifully cooked breast napped in a rich sauce, a gooey square of confit thigh and a half dozen ricotta-filled balls of pasta. It's high-style food, but if you're longing for the classic version, you'll be sorely disappointed. The riffs on California and Southern cuisine don't jibe with the decor. Dixie takes over the Pres a Vi location, which was empty for two years after that restaurant closed. As Pres a Vi, the space was slick and

Family Ever After....: Olympic English Trifle Dessert

Does watching the Olympics just make you want to exercise and be in your best physical condition? I want to go run 5 miles just after watching some of the athletes, haha. In honor of celebrating the Olympics, I thought it would be fun to make a traditional English dinner and dessert. (Ya know, since the Olympics are being held in London. I actually think I'll start a tradition of cooking an international, traditional dinner and dessert every time the Olympics come around, based on the country hey are being held. Fun, right)!? So here's my Olympics-Inspired English Fruit Trifle. (whoops, I titled it "berry trifle" in this picture. it should probably be called "fruit trifle since it has pineapple and kiwi)! Recipe: Fruit- I used fruit in the colors of the Olympic Rings. Blue- blueberries Yel

Martin Griff/The TimesFood and deverage director Jim Byrnes, left, holds a crab and melon appetizer (crab salad over sliced melon, topped with crispy wonton and a citrus sesame aioli), and chef Nino LoCascio holds a pan-seared blackened salmon topped with pineapple mango salsa, served with rice pilaf and seasonal vegetables in front of the Yankee Doodle Tap Room's outdoor dining deck at the Nassau Inn in Princeton. When the spring semester ends at Princeton University and the students exit for their summertime pursuits, Princeton quiets down. Parking is more accessible, and its a great time to visit the towns many restaurants.
