Hearts and Stars WeddingQuilt

I recently made wedding quilts for my husbands two sisters. The first one Im blogging about today was for his sister Cresen who got married about two years ago. (Ill show pictures of the other one next week.) I titled this one simply Hearts and Stars. I made the blocks in a quilting class years ago but was never quite sure what to do with them. When Cresen got married they matched her home decor nicely! Both sisters are really into the Day of the Dead theme, so of course I had to include that fabric on the back. This red fabric is from Alexander Henry, called Paseo De Los Muertos. An alternate title for this quilt could be Americana De Los Muertos. For the star quilting I made a template out of a sticky label and stitched around the outside edges. I also added lots of

Wedding Quilt for Ben and Nicole

I finally decided what I am giving Ben and Nicole for their wedding quilt. Ben graduates from the University of Utah in two months in civil engineering and has been the top Utah cadet in the ROTC. He and Nicole head to a US Army fort right after he graduates and she finishes her first year of teaching kindergarten. After a few months at that army fort, he will be assigned to who-knows-where?? I didnt think I would have time to make them a quilt from start to finish before they leave at the end of May, so was looking at some of my finished quilts to decide if one of them would work. I think I found one that they will like and when a baby comes along, it would look great in a nursery. This quilt really represents the two of them Ben in the military and Nicole as a school teacher.

Kate and Andy's Wedding - Blog

I would like to say a huge congratulations to Kate and Andy Langridge who got married yesterday, an amazing day was had by all. The venue was lovely, the weather was fantastic and Kate looked stunning! Andy looked very nice too :-) Here are the beautiful happy couple! I had the privilege of making the wedding cake. Kate and Andy asked for a cupcake tower with a top cake. Kate wanted to go with simple and elegant. Here is the cake! I am really pleased with how the cake turned out. The top cake is a two tier layer cake with a 6 inch base and a 4 inch top. The flowers are all hand made out of gumpaste and in the centre of some of the flowers I added an edible diamond. The cupcake tower is a new addition to my cake stand collection and one of the best yet. It is the 7 tier maypole made by Clas

A Wedding Industry Grows, Slowly, in Harlem

The fashion show at the Alhambra's 2011 Bridal Expo showcased wedding dresses by local designers. (Photo by Roland Hyde) From traditional white dresses to gold, green and everything in between, the fashion show at Alhambra Ballrooms Bridal Expo had something for everyone. Audience members gasped simultaneously at a halter-style African print wedding dress. The patchwork fabric, similar to a quilt, fused black, gold and a rich blue. We dont always have to wear white, ladies; custom Afro-centric designs are in, wedding coordinator DiAnne Henderson told the brides-to-be, their families and friends. This years expo, at the Alhambra on Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard and 125th Street, drew 25 vendors and about 100 guests. DJ Mario came equipped with a turntable, music and a fitness

thom haus handmade: Running through the Heath

Quilting: This quilt is a wedding present for a dear friend of mine Sarah and her lovely husband Dr P. It's a slightly belated wedding present (they got married in November 2011 in the UK and unfortunately I wasn't able to make it over for their great day). It's a work in progress, but I have given myself a deadline of 4 weeks to try and finish it up and get it posted. The quilt consists of 13, nine patch blocks with 12 plain white blocks in between. As Sarah and Dr P are still living in the UK (and don't seem to have any plans to come home soon - even though I would love them to) I have made this quilt nice and bright to help brighten up those darker winter mornings! I love this quilt for its simplicity and soft and feminine colours (sorry Dr P). Thom also really enjoyed helping me make t

woollykat: Off the Grid: A Wedding Quilt

Off the Grid (2011) T's sister Kari got married over Labor Day weekend. Due to scheduling issues, we were not able to be there for the wedding, but flew out for a few days last week. I brought Kari and Heath's wedding quilt with me on the plane and finished the last bit of the binding as we touched down in Montana! I wanted to make a quilt large enough for them to share while watching TV on the couch--it ended up finishing at about 70" square. This is the largest quilt I've made to date. I wasn't quilt sure how I would get it through my little machine, but it worked! I used a layer cake of Curio by BasicGrey for Moda, Kona Coal, and the binding is Cross Town in Mist from Hometown by Sweetwater for Moda. Fabric from Pink Castle Fabrics. I started out using KarrieLynne's "Boxed In Quilt" pat

Rita Belle Lee Reeves

February 28, 2012 6:00 AM ODESSA Rita Belle Lee Reeves was called home to Christ on February 26, 2012. She was born September 17, 1918 in Loraine, Texas to Charles Lafayette and Audna Gill Lee. Rita attended school in Loraine and moved to Odessa around 1945. In her early days, Rita was quite the pool shark and not many people, men or women, could beat her. Rita worked out of her home ironing and sewing for the public. Some say she would be ironing from dusk until dawn to put food on the table. She ironed until the young age of 92. Rita loved to sew and piece together quilt tops. She made everything from wedding dresses to kids clothing and was still making quilt tops until a few months before she passed. Rita never complained about anything and had a strong faith in God. She read the bible

Quilting Donnas Wedding Quilt LoveBug Studios

Donna Mo is a really, really good friend of mine who I met through the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild. On a regular basis (about once a month) she comes to my house for a day or two of sewing. And she doesnt come to work on her projects, she comes to work on mine. She has been such a great help to me this year, keeping me motivated, helping me check things off the list, and is just really fun to be around. So I am really happy to be able to do things for her in return, and this was one of my opportunities. Donna wanted really simple quilting on this one, and if theres one thing I know about my free motion quilting, its that I find it hard to do simple, open, and big. This is where my pantograph patterns come in really handy. Donna chose a large open stipple and I was happy to oblige.

Family Value: Making Late-Life Divorces Easier

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver announced their separation in May after 25 years together. Tipper and Al Gore separated last year after being married for four decades. These long-wedded political couples are far from alone. A U.S. Census report issued earlier this year found that, over time, fewer first-time-married couples are making it to their 25th, 30th and 35th wedding anniversarieseven as life expectancies have increased. Associated Press Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006: Longtime married couples must wrestle with dividing assets even in an amicable divorce The data don't indicate how old the couples were when they broke up, says Bradford Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia. But some divorce attorneys and financial
